Announcing the Launch of Ethio Voice Network (EVN)
We are delighted to announce today the official launch of EVN. After months of dedicated effort to lay the necessary groundwork, a new digital media outlet and platform has come to fruition.
In the pursuit of justice, freedom, and democratic ideals, the role of media emerges as a cornerstone for upholding the rule of law and nurturing societies where equality and freedom prevail. However, in contexts like Ethiopia, progress has time and again been overshadowed and derailed by regressive tyranny, casting media as the first casualty when power is wielded irresponsibly and unaccountably.
A nation burdened by 27 years of struggle against the iron-fist rule of the TPLF-dominated regime, Ethiopia heralded a new era of reform, igniting a spark of optimism for a brighter future. The forceful emergence of this reform marked a watershed moment and a clarion call for a society eager to usher in an era of freedom that was supposed to permanently close the chapter of tyranny.
Regrettably, promises turned to disillusionment as Abiy Ahmed, the “reformist” young leader, once hailed as a cheetah outpacing Africa’s old and tired hippos, recanted commitments, plunging the nation into the quagmire of internecine conflict, mass displacement, escalating ethnic tensions, unprecedented violence, mass upheaval, arbitrary repression, loss of life, and fear. Once again, our poor nation is paying the exorbitant cost of unbridled destruction and death.
Within this treacherous landscape, the Ethio Voice Network (EVN) rises to bridge the void engendered by regression and tyranny. Therefore, the overarching goals of EVN encompass:
- EVN is dedicated to collecting, reporting, and disseminating information grounded in the bedrock principles of ethical journalism—truth, accuracy, independence, fairness, and objectivity.
- EVN provides a platform for suppressed voices to resonate, fostering dialogues and offering pathways to address pressing issues, including the specter of political violence.
- Recognizing the distortions prevalent in Western media, EVN strives to broadcast news and insights on Ethiopia in English, aiming to contribute to rectifying prevailing biases.
- With unwavering commitment, EVN is poised to circumvent the government-imposed information blackout by transmitting via satellite TV, aiming to connect with Ethiopia despite censorship. The transmissions will commence upon completing all necessary prerequisites.
The Ethio Voice Network extends an earnest invitation, beckoning the active engagement of Ethiopians both within the Diaspora and back home. This platform is designed to serve our people, fostering unity in diversity and a shared commitment to a revitalized Ethiopia. Together, we will weave a narrative of resilience, hope, and transformation. By doing so, we can not only make a difference but also contribute our share to force change to the detriment of the tyranny of the few.
