EUGENE, Sept 17 (EVN)- Gudaf Tsegay of Ethiopia smashed the women’s 5,000-meter world record on Sunday, clocking 14 minutes and 0.21 seconds at the Eugene Diamond League finale. Tsegay’s remarkable feat shattered the previous record set by Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon in June.
Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet secured the second spot with a time of 14 minutes and 5.92 seconds, while Ethiopia’s Ejgayehu Taye clinched third place with a time of 14 minutes and 21.52 seconds.
“I was solely focused on breaking the world record today,” Tsegay declared, expressing her ambition to further challenge the distance by aiming for a sub-14-minute run.
Tsegay set an electrifying pace from the race’s outset, spurred on by Chebet. The two athletes quickly distanced themselves from the pack. Approximately 800 meters from the finish line, Tsegay surged ahead, leaving Chebet in her wake. .
The jubilant crowd erupted into cheers as Tsegay crossed the finish line, achieving her historic milestone at the very same track where she had claimed world championship gold in the same event just a year earlier. Her celebration was understated as she absorbed the magnitude of her achievement.
