Dejen Media (August 2)–Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Demeke Mekonen, has expressed grave concern over the escalating security challenges in various areas of the Amhara region. In a statement he posted on social media on Wednesday, Demeke emphasized the urgency of finding peaceful and dialogue-based solutions to address the unfolding crisis.
Mekonen highlighted that the approach to resolving these issues should not involve obstructing solutions, depriving people of their rights, or adopting complicated measures that hinder long-term resolutions. He underscored the significance of peaceful dialogue and urged stakeholders to engage in a constructive manner to address the mounting security problems.
“We are in a critical period, and it is crucial to carefully consider that without peace, we risk losing everything,” Mekonen warned. He called for drawing inspiration from the wisdom of past generations who navigated through numerous challenges and problems with sagacity.
Mekonen compared the current situation to the absence of esteemed elders, mentors, or religious figures, stating that without their guidance, the nation faces threats from internal and external forces that can undermine its power, dignity, and security.
Addressing public expectations following the recent changes, Mekonen acknowledged that there may be dissatisfaction and other issues that require attention. He urged thorough contemplation and the pursuit of lasting and peaceful solutions.
In a separate message shared on his social media page, Mekonen emphasized the paramount importance of upholding law and order as the cornerstone of stability and security for all citizens.
As concerns grow over security in the Amhara region, Mekonen’s call for peaceful dialogue and adherence to the rule of law underscores the need for a measured and constructive approach to resolving the pressing challenges facing Ethiopia.
