SAN FRANCISCO—OpenAI has unveiled Sora Turbo, the latest version of its text-to-video model. This model allows users to create high-resolution videos up to 20 seconds long from a simple text or image prompt.

The release is part of OpenAI’s 12-day “ship-mas” series. Sora Turbo is available through a dedicated website for U.S. and many other regions, but not Europe yet. Early users reported “sign ups are temporarily unavailable” due to heavy traffic.

Sora impressed AI experts when previewed in February. However, competing models like Google’s Veo and Runway’s Gen-3 Alpha have since emerged, adding pressure on OpenAI’s release.

OpenAI offers two plans: the $20 per month ChatGPT Plus plan includes 50 priority videos at 720p resolution for up to 5 seconds each. The $200 per month Pro plan offers “unlimited generations,” 500 priority videos at 1080p, and durations up to 20 seconds. The Pro plan also allows watermark-free downloads and simultaneous video generation.

OpenAI showcased new features on Sora’s explore page, such as a feed of community-generated videos, storyboards for sequential prompts, and tools to animate images and blend scenes. The “remix” tool lets users refine videos with text prompts.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, shared his excitement on X, stating, “One of the most exciting things to me about this product is how easy it is to co-create with others; it feels like an interesting new thing! This is early—think of it like GPT-1 for video—but I already think the feed is so compelling. Excited to see what you make :).”

Altman detailed the subscription plans, noting, “With an OpenAI Plus account, you get 50 generations per month. With a Pro account, you get 500 fast generations (or fewer at high resolution) and unlimited in a slower generation mode. Available in many countries, but not most of Europe and the UK for now.”

As Sora Turbo rolls out, OpenAI is set to redefine AI in video generation, positioning itself at the forefront of technological innovation.
